    Frequently Asked Questions

Q How do you determine the right material for each label order?
A There are thousands of label face materials available to choose from, ranging from papers to foils to decorative and durable film materials. A Coast Label Applications Specialist will work with you to select the material that meets your specific needs. We will take into consideration how the label will be used, the environmental exposures that are likely, any secondary printing operations that might take place, and other factors that are important to you.
Q I have a difficult surface to apply a label to. Are there a variety of adhesives to choose from?
A As with face materials, there are adhesives designed for every situation. Adhesives range from the temporary and repositionable 3M 1000 (Post-it ®) adhesive to industrial-grade permanent acrylic adhesives designed to affix a label for the life of a durable industrial machine. Your Applications Specialist will help determine the right adhesive for your application.
Q How will I know what the label face stock will look like or how well the adhesive will work in my application?
A After you and your Applications Specialist discuss your label needs and we learn what your application requires, we will send samples of the materials we have recommended. This will allow you to test the materials in the way you will use them so you can be certain they meet your needs.
Q Can I purchase labels with static information printed with my company colors in addition to consecutive numbers and/or consecutive bar codes?
A Absolutely! We can print your static information in up to 6 colors, and the consecutive numbers and bar codes can be printed in black or many other colors. Bar codes printed in red generally won't scan, but many other colors will, and consecutive numbers can be printed in any color.
Q Do I have choices with respect to the way the labels are finished and packaged?
A Labels can be finished in many ways, with the three most popular being rolls, cut sheets, or fan-folded stacks. Your Applications Specialist will discuss your specific needs with you so that we deliver labels in the format most useful to you. Factors to consider include whether the labels will be used in a printer and/or whether they will be hand or machine applied. And, we can meet any special packaging requirements you may have.
Q Can you manufacture labels that meet Underwriters Laboratories requirements?
A Yes! Coast Label has gone through the rigorous process of earning the right to manufacture labels that meet the standard of UL 969 for Labeling & Marking Systems. Our UL Recognized Component Labels can be made from a variety of durable materials with an assortment of adhesives to meet your exact UL labeling requirements.
Q I need labels that will stand up to a harsh environment. Do you have solutions?
A We design labels for almost any environment. In addition to being able to print on many durable films coated with high-performance adhesives, we can also overlaminate the labels to protect the graphics. Labels can be overlaminated with Mylar® (polyester) or Lexan® (polycarbonate) films in a variety of thicknesses depending upon the needs of the application. Ask your Applications Specialist for details.
Q Who produces the artwork necessary to print the labels?
A We can produce the artwork and send a proof to you, or we can receive artwork from you. We can accept artwork produced with most graphics software programs, on either Macintosh or Windows Platforms. Art can be sent electronically or on a disk. We can even work with most negatives and reflective artwork. Our pre-press specialists will work closely with you to make labels that look exactly as you need them to look regardless of the artwork we are starting with.
Q What size and shape can the labels be?
A Coast Label Company is a custom label manufacturer, so we will make the labels to meet your exact needs, including metric sizes. And, with over 30 years experience making custom labels, we have built up a cutting die (die cutting?) library with thousands of shapes and sizes to choose from. Discuss your specific needs with one of our Applications Specialists.
Q What if you don't have a standard material that meets my needs?
A If we cannot find a facestock/adhesive combination that meets your needs, we will work with our suppliers to have a material custom made just for you. We can also have materials made with patterned adhesives (sticky in some areas, no adhesive in others), piggyback constructions, or with other custom features. Just ask!
Q I need a label that will show evidence of tampering. Can you produce these?
A Coast Label has a number of solutions for security and authentication. We stock special security label materials that cannot be removed intact. Another solution we offer are labels made from special "Void" polyester materials. These labels prevent covert transfer because removal permanently activates the "Void" feature. We can also make labels with special features such as numbering, bar coding, holograms, destruct-slit die cutting and invisible (heat or U.V. activated) inks to create labels that do just what your application requires. Call a Coast Label Applications Specialist for expert help with security labels.
Q I need a laser label, but the office supply stores don't have what I need. Can you help me?
A This is an area of specialty for us. We can manufacture custom laser printer (or copier) labels with any die shape you can imagine, and the sheets can be letter size, legal size, or just about any other size you need -- including A4. Labels can be made from paper, vinyl, polyester and even laser-compatible foil. There are many adhesives to choose from, including removable and cold temperature. And, labels can be pre-printed in up to six colors so your label will have the visual impact you need. Call to discuss your needs with a Coast Label Applications Specialist.
